"To welcome the opportunity of contributing to the world's work in the community where I am placed because of the joy of service thereby bestowed and the talent of leadership multiplied"

Did you know that 8% of the United States' population is affected by diabetes? This is why it is important that Alpha Gam recognizes diabetes research as our philanthropy. We have partnered with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) to bring aid to the thousands of children and teens affected by this chronic disease.

Alpha Gamma Delta was the first women’s fraternity to establish an international philanthropic project. In 1920, a summer camp for underprivileged children was opened in Jackson, Michigan. For more than 25 years, the collegians and alumnae staffed the summer camps before Alpha Gamma Delta changed its philanthropic focus. The Fraternity sponsored a training program for counselors involved with the rehabilitation of the physically impaired in 1947. In 1979, the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation was adopted as the official beneficiary of financial support and service. The philanthropic efforts of the Fraternity were directed toward the treatment, research and cure of diabetes mellitus in 1991. In 1990, the official Foundation name became the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation.

Helping organizations and people in need is an integral part of Alpha Gamma Delta. Each chapter includes philanthropic projects in its annual calendar to benefit the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation. Such projects are fun and exciting ways of sisterhood bonding, while serving the needs of others. It is the responsibility of each sister to "contribute to the world's work."

Every year at SSU, we support the Alpha Gamma Delta Foundation through our spring philanthropy called LIP JAM.  Through this annual lip-syncing and dancing competition, we have earned the title of having the "Best Event On Campus".  We are proud to say that this past spring of 2010, we exceeded our goal and raised over $12,500 in support of juvenile diabetes and education!

As well as LIP JAM, we participate in monthly philanthropic activites such as beach clean-ups and walks for diabetes! Check out our philanthropy pictures in Photo Galleries!
